Presentation of Atelier Martel

Atelier Martel is a collective of architects committed to supporting artistic creation, through the organization of public exhibitions in its premises and the association of artists in the design and production process of its building projects.
Founded in 2009 on the eponymous street in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, architects Marc Chassin, Stéphane Cachat and Laurent Noël decided to join forces within the same entity and participate in the development of joint projects under the name Atelier Martel.
Basing its practice on an idea of collective and interdisciplinary production, Atelier Martel defines its production through its commitment to the social dimension of architecture and its capacity for artistic and cultural expression.
Atelier Martel pursues the path of committed and rooted architecture, by distancing itself from globalized architectural abstraction. A slow research on the thickness of time to embody places, landscapes through buildings that dialogue between the emotions of the traditional city and new contemporary uses. A transversal position at the crossroads of the most cutting-edge architectural, artistic, cultural, and environmental practices, always at the service of the city and humanity.

The Atelier Martel Prize – Tangible Image Biennale 2025

Atelier Martel is awarding a Tangible Image Biennale 2025 prize on two levels: a three-month solo exhibition on its premises, and the winner's involvement with the project management team for the construction of a building.

The exhibition

The exhibition will be organized as part of the workshop's regular exhibition program, which includes three annual exhibitions.
The exhibition space is a semi-open space of 280 m² where around twenty people work daily. The exhibition can concern a fraction or the entire space, and take any form, with the only limitation being the maintenance of a fully functional workspace.
Atelier Martel is responsible for organizing the exhibition and associated events (invitations, press releases, opening receptions, and any additional events during the exhibition: round tables, debate meetings, etc.). The agency is providing financial support for the hanging and production of the exhibition to the tune of €1000.

Collaboration on an architectural project

The collaboration will be scheduled based on the nature of the artist's work and project opportunities: it will require a phase of exchanges with both the architects and the building's sponsor, who will be involved in validating the artist's choice and the direction of the work - the production of which they ultimately finance. Several collaboration opportunities will therefore be offered to the artist, until the one most suited to the personality and work of the winning artist is validated.
This collaboration will be remunerated as an intellectual service, carried out within the framework of project studies: the amount of this remuneration will represent 1% of the amount of the architects' fees, with a minimum of €3000 in the case of a modest-sized building.
These fees cover the design of the work, and the time spent finalizing the project with architects and construction companies.
The cost of producing the work will be included in the companies' work contracts.

Procedures for designating the winner

This Tangible Image Biennale 2025 prize is envisaged by Atelier Martel as an original way of building a relationship with an artist, for a future intervention whose framework remains open.
The jury will be made up of the three partners of Atelier Martel, artists who have previously collaborated with the agency, as well as a panel of qualified individuals: curator, collector, teacher, etc.
The jury will rank three artists from the list of artists selected for the 2025 Biennale. The artist who comes first will be asked to be named the winner, which implies accepting the adventure of art-architecture collaboration. If the artist declines, the artist who comes second will be asked to be named the winner, and so on.
