Julie Chovin / Paul Créange / Jonathan Monaghan

Julie CHOVIN
Born in 1983 in Valence.
Lives and works in Berlin.
Graduated from the Saint-Étienne School of Art and Design.

“Variation on Residences” searches for traces of Białystok Castle, Poland, where the artist did a residency in 2017. It takes as a starting point a series of documentary photos of colorful postmodernist real estate, mostly built after 1989, celebrating the start of capitalism and freedom in Eastern Europe. It follows a variation of works on plexiglass, mixing photographs of objects and archetypal castle shapes from plastic toys for children. These pieces appear like a theater set or an open building, with no interior or exterior. They shine like fake diamonds of plexiglass, an artificial material of the oil age, a cheap substitute for glass, used mainly in the enterprises of late capitalism.

Paul CREANGE
Born in 1987 in Troyes.
Lives and works in Paris.
Graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 2015.

Paul Créange set out to “twist” the photographic image in multiple directions and to dissect it. Until the point where it appeared to him that the images produced no longer had any reason to remain frozen in the flatness of the photographic device. This evolution has resulted in a hybridization between photo, sculpture and light installation. It was by working on advertising sets that he was able to realize the amount of waste generated by such “all-disposable” manufacturing processes, and began to collect them, transform them and reuse them in his creations. plastics.
Photography brings an aura to sculpture, and gives it its color, depth and content, in the form of shards of fragmented nature. The sculpture tries to bring these fragments together and reintegrate them into an organic formal unity - while exposing the artificial character of this precarious pseudo-organism, whose entrails and structure are visible -, and to weave a dialectic between naturalness and artificiality. .

Jonathan Monaghan
Born in 1986 in New York. Lives and works in Washington DC
Graduated from the New York Institute of Technology and Fine Arts from the University of Maryland.
Represented by the 22,48m2 gallery (Paris).

Presented in the form of large wall decals, the “Sentries” series sits between photography and sculpture. Using a wide range of photographic materials and textures, the shapes that make up these large installations are created using 3D CGI software. The resulting images are crisp and detailed, as are the visual aesthetics of the ads. Pink or candy-green in color, these baroque pieces thus use familiar consumerist visual codes, or appear as extraterrestrial artefacts of strange dimensions. Navigating from a soft and satiny aesthetic, which may however put us off, to a futuristic universe, these works take up the iconography of electronic devices and surveillance cameras. They reveal the obsessions, anxieties and exhibitionism of our society in the digital age.
